Botanists Describe New Ginger Lily Hedychium zubeengargianum from Shillong
Botanists have formally described a new ginger lily species, Hedychium zubeengargianum (family Zingiberaceae; genus Hedychium), discovered in Shillong. It was first identified in 2018 at the Botanical Survey of India’s garden, Shillong, and formally published on July 21, 2026. The fragrant, creamy-white wild ginger lily is named after Zubeen Garg. Another eponym, Osbeckia zubeengargiana, was named in 2026 from Manas National Park grasslands.
