Kufri Jamunia Purple Potato Variety Through Biofortification
ICAR develops nutrient-rich coloured potato varieties to improve the intake of essential vitamins and minerals through daily food consumption. Kufri Jamunia is an indigenously developed purple coloured potato variety developed by ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute via biofortification.
Kufri Jamunia and ICAR Coloured Potato Varieties:
| Dimension | Key Details |
|---|---|
| Developed by | Kufri Jamunia is developed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI) via biofortification. |
| Variety type | Kufri Jamunia comprises an indigenously developed, purple coloured, medium-maturing potato variety. |
| Plant characteristics | Kufri Jamunia comprises medium-tall plants with a semi-compact canopy. |
| Tuber characteristics | The tubers are dark purple on the skin and purple in the flesh, oblong, with shallow eyes, and a mealy texture. |
| Biofortification definition and mechanism | Biofortification improves the nutrient content of crops through plant breeding, enabling food to naturally provide higher levels of essential nutrients; unlike conventional food fortification, it integrates nutrition directly into the crop. |
| Productivity per plant | Each plant produces 10–12 medium to large tubers. |
| Yield under recommended practices | Kufri Jamunia produces 32–35 tonnes per hectare under recommended cultivation practices. |
| Station trial yield and duration | Kufri Jamunia has recorded around 49 tonnes per hectare yield in station trials at 90 days duration. |
| Marketable yield in trials | Marketable yield has reached nearly 90% of total production in trials. |
| Dormancy | Kufri Jamunia shows medium dormancy of around 6–8 weeks. |
| Storage quality | Kufri Jamunia possesses good storage quality with low rot and minimal weight loss. |
| Nutritional components | Kufri Jamunia contains anthocyanins, Vitamin C, carotenoids, zinc, and iron. |
| Other ICAR coloured potato varieties | ICAR varieties comprise Kufri Neelkanth and Kufri Manik. |
| Kufri Neelkanth release and key attribute | Kufri Neelkanth has been released in 2018, and it is the first purple-skinned speciality potato variety known for its high antioxidant content. |
| Kufri Neelkanth suitability and coverage | Kufri Neelkanth is suitable for cultivation in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, and it is suitable for people of all age groups. |
| Kufri Manik release | Kufri Manik has been released in 2021. |
| Kufri Manik tuber traits | Kufri Manik produces attractive, deep red tubers with a round shape, medium eyes, and yellow flesh. |
| Kufri Manik nutrition | Kufri Manik is rich in nutrients and contains high levels of anthocyanin, zinc, and iron. |
