Matua Community in Bengal
Reports indicate voter deletions affecting members of the Matua community during Special Intensive Revision in West Bengal. The Matua community is a Dalit Scheduled Caste group, primarily from the Namasudra sect, with roots in East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh). “Matua” denotes “Naame Preme Matoyara” (devotion). The Matua Mahasangha, founded by Harichand Thakur in the 19th century, is a socio-religious movement addressing socio-economic, educational and cultural challenges.
