Borophene–Castor Oil Green Lubricants

Scientists from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, demonstrate the use of borophene as a high-performance lubricant additive in castor oil. The demonstration uses a minimal concentration of borophene and reports improved lubrication performance without chemical modification of the oil.

Borophene–Castor Oil Green Lubricant Additive:

Dimension Key Details
Borophene (definition) Borophene comprises a two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial composed of a single atomic layer of boron atoms.
Borophene (properties) Borophene comprises the following properties: high mechanical strength; excellent thermal conductivity; high electrical conductivity; superior chemical stability; and excellent load-bearing capability.
Additive concentration used The nano-additive concentration applies at 0.1 wt.% borophene in castor oil.
Lubrication performance outcome The formulation provides for substantial improvement in lubrication performance without chemical modification of the oil.
Protective tribofilm During operation, a protective tribofilm comprises iron oxides, carbonaceous compounds, and boron-based compounds.
Key advantages The borophene-based bio-lubricant provides for reduced energy losses associated with friction, improved operational efficiency in machinery, reduced reliance on petroleum-based lubricants, minimised wear and surface degradation of mechanical components, and environmentally friendly alternatives supporting sustainable manufacturing practices.
Applications Applies to renewable energy systems, including wind and solar power equipment; marine industry applications; heavy industrial machinery and equipment; automotive lubrication systems; green manufacturing processes; and sustainable lubrication technologies.
IASST (status and administrative control) IASST is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
IASST (location) IASST is located in Guwahati, Assam.
IASST (objectives) IASST provides for advanced analytical facilities for interdisciplinary sciences, provides for assistance to researchers from IASST, other institutes, and industries, and provides for upgrading and maintaining state-of-the-art infrastructure for research excellence.
