Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) recently secures a ₹127 crore contract from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL), Bhutan, for construction works related to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. The project is in news due to the award of this construction contract for the hydropower facility in Bhutan.

Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project (Bhutan):

River system	The Wangchu River, also called Raidāk River in India, is a significant tributary of the Brahmaputra River.
Developer and JV partners	It is being developed by WHPL, a joint venture formed by India’s Adani Power Limited and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd.
Equity structure	DGPC holds a controlling 51% stake, and Adani Power owns 49%.
Project value	The project is valued at ₹6,000 crore.
Implementation model	The project follows a Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) model.
BOOT framework provision	Under the BOOT framework, Adani Power constructs, operates, and manages the project for a fixed period before transferring ownership to the Bhutanese government.
MoU linkage	It is the first initiative under an MoU signed in May 2025 between Adani Power and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
Operational configuration	The facility functions as a peaking run-of-river plant.
Turbines	The facility features 4 turbines, each rated at 142.5 MW.
Annual generation	It produces roughly 2,478.93 GWh annually.
Electricity supply and export	It is designed to meet Bhutan’s peak winter electricity demand while exporting surplus power to India during the summer months.
