NGOPV ‘Shruti’ Launched at GRSE Kolkata for Indian Navy Operations

The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) ‘Shruti’ is launched at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata. The vessel is in news as part of the Indian Navy’s NGOPV construction programme being undertaken concurrently at two shipyards.

Naming	The ships derive their name from India’s rich heritage, with this ship being named ‘Shruti’, referring to four Vedas.
Crest design	The crest design depicts the constellation of Ursa Major and a red and white coloured light house.
Design status	Shruti is indigenously designed.
Operational role	It will augment the existing OPVs and NOPVs for multi domain operations, such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, HADR, and anti-piracy missions.
Displacement	NGOPVs comprise a displacement of 3,000 tonnes.
Speed	NGOPVs achieve speeds of up to 23 knots.
Endurance	NGOPVs have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots.
Policy linkage	The NGOPV programme is in consonance with the Government of India’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
