Q 216 / 466

UPSC CSE Prelims 2018

The practice of dieting has become an epidemic; everyone is looking out for a way to attain that perfect body. We are all different with respect to our ethnicity, genetics, family history, gender, age, physical and mental and spiritual health status, lifestyles and preferences. Thereby we also differ in what foods we tolerate or are sensitive to. So we really cannot reduce so many complexities into one diet or diet book. This explains the failure of diets across the world in curbing obesity. Unless the reasons for weight gain are well understood and addressed and unless habits are changed permanently, no diet is likely to succeed.

What is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?

EXPLANATION

Correct Option (D)

The passage explicitly states that individual differences in ethnicity, genetics, health status, lifestyles, and preferences mean that "we really cannot reduce so many complexities into one diet or diet book." This directly explains "the failure of diets across the world in curbing obesity." Therefore, the most logical inference is that a universal, perfect diet or a single solution for obesity does not exist due to inherent individual variations.

Incorrect Options:

The passage identifies "the practice of dieting" as an epidemic, not explicitly stating that "obesity has become an epidemic all over the world." While obesity is the context for dieting, the passage does not make this direct assertion.

The passage mentions that "everyone is looking out for a way to attain that perfect body" as a premise for the widespread practice of dieting. However, this observation is a contributing factor to the problem discussed, rather than the primary logical inference derived from the passage's overall argument about the failure of diets.

The passage does not claim that obesity is an incurable disease. Instead, it suggests that success in managing weight requires understanding the specific reasons for weight gain and implementing permanent habit changes, implying that effective solutions are achievable through personalized strategies.
